While carrying out the order, they noticed Hallvard, a notorious former member of the Mársmidr who had fled Strand months ago after stealing from his gang, following the two varls Olaf and Ulfvalgr, and a boy Stefnir. The killings ignited a gang war, decimating the ranks of both gangs, with the City Watch of Strand arresting some of the rest.Įirik and Valgard were later sent to infiltrate a caravan coming into the city, in order to keep a lookout for anyone smuggling goods, and were told to mark carts of merchants involved in bribing the guards. The two men finished off nearly everyone there who hadn't been killed by the opposing gang member, but one of them was able to escape and call for reinforcements, leading both to flee. Eirik soon shoved Valgard into the Glotta-Oxs, which led to a violent armed brawl. When members of the Glotta-Ox and Oerr-Brandr gathered at Veggr's Drinking Hall for a drink, both men pretended to get into a fistfight. As part of his plan, he disguised himself as a refugee named "Thorgils", asking them to be smuggled into Strand and agreeing to become a member to pay the debt, while Valgard did the same with the Oerr-Brandrs. Under the orders of steward Olvir, Eirik infiltrated one of the gangs called the " Glotta-Ox", who were locked in a violent feud with another gang called the " Oerr-Brandr", about two months before the Third Great War, in order to destroy both gangs who operated in the slums of Hundgaman. Although Eirik saw the Vaka'auga spymaster Leiknir among the assailants as they fled, he was unable to have him convicted. About a year before the Third Great War, he traveled with the governor's legitimate son Ragnar for inspecting Karlshus, and saved his life from an attack by the Aetla Hilmir, who had been motivated by the Vak'auga to prove that they were willing to take over Strand. In time, Eirik came to be reputed as one of the most able agents of the Guard and was nicknamed the "Iron Turtle" due to his knack for survival.ĭuring his time at the Great Hall, Eirik formed close friendships with his fellow agent Valgard and Strand's official blacksmith Gylfi. This allowed him a bed and living quarters of his own, something he was thankful for even if the amenities were unremarkable. He was eventually able to join the Governor's Guard due to his cunningness and fighting ability. When he was fourteen, she started suffering from a pox disease called the "Northern Chills" and wrote a letter, before instructing him to take it to the governor at the Great Hall in case she died, which she did a week later.Įirik went to the Great Hall to honor his late mother's last wishes, but was turned away twice before the Governor's Steward Olvir noticed him and took him under his care after reading the letter. As his mother was poor, this left his family lacking in having basic amenities, although she was secretly gifted enough money at regular intervals for his education. Eventually he earned himself the nickname "The Iron Turtle".Įirik is the illegitimate son of the current governor of Strand and a bar maid. Plenty of warring clans within Strand have tried to take him down, none have succeeded. Eirik is the guy who gets stuff done for the governor of Strand, though for a man with a heavy responsibility he seems to have an awful lot of freedom in his methods.

Because multi-messenger software like this retrieves data from different services, updates to these services can often cause instability, or even incompatibility. One major downside of such apps is compatibility. This is especially handy because it means that you can uninstall multiple apps from different providers, including Facebook Messenger. Multi-messenger apps bring several services together into one easily accessible app. With such a plethora of social media platforms and instant messaging apps, it can be very difficult to keep track of everything. On top of this, iOS 11 users have complained about long loading times. Additionally, there have also been reports of performance problems: e.g., some notifications are said to arrive quite late. One disadvantage when compared with its competitors is the relatively bulky file size of about 18 MB. Although it must be said that Friendly is still very much centered around Facebook Messenger and has a very appealing slim touch and modern design. In the fee-based version, Friendly Plus (for Android (as an upgrade) and iOS $1.99), it's also possible to hide unwanted Facebook ads with the handy keyword filtering feature.Īnother notable feature is the quite simple, but very welcome integration of Instagram. Similar to the above-mentioned apps, Friendly combines Facebook with Facebook Messenger, while also saving considerably more energy. This will most likely be the case as long as Metal and Swipe remain exclusively available for Android. We have compiled both the best wrappers and multi-messaging apps, which can be used as Facebook Messenger alternatives on Android or iOS.įor iOS users, Friendly ( Android and iOS) is one of the best alternatives alternative to Facebook Messenger. The latter are apps that read Facebook's website and 'repack' the data for you. However, a distinction is made between multi-messaging apps, which combine many different messaging services in a single app, and so-called wrappers. There are now numerous alternatives to Facebook Messenger on the market. Facebook Messenger constantly scans internal data such as contacts, browser history, calendar info, and even GPS data. This should also ring alarm bells when it comes to data protection. This becomes especially annoying when you realize that the app always runs in the background, consuming both battery power and data. Since Facebook deactivated the messaging feature within their mobile app, users appear to have no choice but to switch to the separate Messenger app. Facebook's official messenger app is the obvious way for many smartphone users to chat and share content with their social media contacts. In the Properties of Matter Unit we are studied: Next time I will share some of the activities we did as we learned about some of the characteristics of liquids (adhesion, cohesion, surface tension, etc.)Ĭheck out our 50+ Page Three States of Matter PacketĪfter finishing this unit, we went straight on to our next unit, the Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter. I went over how to make a bar graph and a pie graph (using markers as an example) And then I gave them the “What is in our air? handout and had them create graphs demonstrating the actual composition of air: Then we talked about the actual composition of air which surprised them! I asked the kids what gases they thought made up most of our air, they tossed out oxygen, carbon-dioxide and hydrogen. In this activity, we talked about the composition of our air. Have your student force air into the bag through the straw demonstrating that air takes up space! Seal it most of the way with a straw on one end. They weren’t sure, so we did a couple of activities that gas, indeed, has weight and takes up space. I asked the kids if air has weight or if air takes up space. Each day, the kids had to sort the characteristics into the correct groups (from our States of Matter Packet):Īnd now to some of the activities we did about Gases: We reviewed the characteristics of the three states (we only briefly mentioned plasma, the fourth state, though my oldest went on to read up about it online!). This year, they made notebook pages (both options are included in the States of Matter packet): Several years ago, the kids made interactive-notebook pages about the 3 States of Matter Then they filled out the notebook page with pictures of various solids, liquids and gases. I then asked them to count how many they had listed – and challenged them to beat their previous number! I set the timer again for two minutes and they wrote furiously!! We used the printable from our States of Matter packet for this activity. The kids had to brainstorm as many examples as they could in two minutes. We started the unit with a discussion of the states of matter: solids, liquids and gases. Today, I’m going to share four hands-on activities we did about air. Short videos like these are a great way for student to see what's involved in a project or activity before starting. We started our chemistry unit this year with a study of the States of Matter – Solids, Liquids and Gases. The following videos are from the activities mentioned above. How Do Melting Polar Ice Caps Affect Sea Levels?: explore the change from solid to liquid in the context of polar ice caps.

Specifically, do you think this will help the film do better globally? Yanes: In addition to Enter The Warriors Gate being shot in China and Canada, it was also produced by Chinese and French companies. Tonally Pirates of the Caribbean was also a touchstone for fun, quirky action adventure. For the Asian part I was vibing on Hero, House of Flying Daggers and all those millions of 1980s Ninja movies I watched and forgot all the names off. The wizard character is inspired by the wizard in Sword in the Stone as well as Fizban in the Dragonlance books by Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman. Of course The Last Starfighter sprung to mind. Hoene: I was thinking of the old Amblin classics like E.T. Yanes: When you began developing the look for the movie and its action sequences, were there any movies you paid homage to? When I started reading I fell in love with the innocent 90ties throwback vibes, the easy going humour, the big archetypal characters, the beautiful fantasy setting and the action. You can imagine my excitement when I received the script with Luc’s and Robert Kamen’s name on the coverpage. Hoene: Ever since I managed to get a yellow belt in Ninjutsu, I always wanted to make a martial arts movie, but I thought that only two Western producers would be credible enough to do it with: Quentin Tarantino and Luc Besson. Yanes: What attracted you to Enter The Warriors Gate ? Was there something in the script that specifically resonated for you? I’ll leave you to guess what the ‘etc’ stand for. That said, I also did not want to make the switch into films only to be doing a horror sequel, so I tried the hard way and developed my own original story Cockneys vs Zombies which incidentally might soon find itself serialized on TV as Cockneys vs Zombies ETC. It’s the difference between a sprint and a marathon. But the storytelling in commercials is mostly done in 10-20 shots, and in films it’s not about shots but all about the scenes. Hoene: Commercials give you a technical experience and ease on set that is helpful when making the switch to films. What are some of the key ways producing commercials have prepare you to make feature length movies? Yanes: You mainly began your film career by making commercials. Martins College in London that I found fellow filmmakers and was inspired to pick up my first Super 8 cameras and make those pictures move. I was fascinated by the worlds that filmmakers where creating, but having grown up in a family of scientists with literally no connections to anyone working in film it was only at St. Hoene: I started as an illustrator for some small German fantasy role playing games like Der Ruf Des Warlocks. Did you specifically go to school to learn about film making? If not, how did you learn? Yanes: I couldn’t find much information about your education. But I like having a hand in shaping the tone and overall feel of a project and decided very early on that I would only direct and with that mantra I worked my way up. Hoene: I was doing everything on my first shorts and music videos: Writing, directing, cinematography, acting, editing and sound design and I always loved all the different aspects of the process. Yanes: On this note, when did you know you wanted to have a career in cinema production? Do you think there was a specific movie that pushed you in this direction? I was also into fantasy role playing games and started illustrating covers for local fanzines and games, before getting curious about how to make those images move. There I got into obscure Eastern European stop motion by Jan Svankmayer, discovered Japanese Anime, French arthouse like Delicatessen, New Zealand arthouse like Braindead and Hong Kong action cinema like Tsui Hark’s A Chinese Ghost Story, Zhang Ymou’s Hero and The 36 th Chambre of Shaolin. Matthias Hoene: I was inspired by my bi-weekly trips to my local VHS rental store the ‘Videodrome’ in Berlin. To learn more about Hoene’s work check out his homepage and follow him on twitter at Yanes: Growing up, what were some of the movies and shows that caused you to fall in love with filmmaking? Wanting to learn more about his newest film and his career, Hoene allowed me to interview him for ScifiPulse. Hoene’s latest film is an action-adventure martial arts fantasy called, Enter The Warriors Gate. Hoene made the jump to feature length films by writing and directing Cockneys vs Zombies. Martins and then transitioning into commercials and music videos. He pursued this passion by studying at Central St. Matthias Hoene has had a love of films since the days of VHS rental stores. In addition to seeking out laughter, Pikuniku’s levels provide plenty of collectibles to find and sometimes wear on your head. It is just a shame that some jokes are genuinely funny, because they make the less funny moments that much more apparent. Some of the best moments require some searching and exploration through the game’s levels, but there are some great laughs to be had in Pikuniku. In fact there have been several times that I laughed out loud because of well constructed jokes. None of this, however, is to say that Pikuniku is not funny. Yet, when several different characters have a habit of sounding completely bored, it just sounds like the game itself is bored. The game has a lot of jokes or little stories end abruptly in an attempt at dry humor. If the main characters in a video game feel uninterested, then I probably will start to do the same. Rather, it makes the characters involved feel uninterested and bored. The final boss’ anticlimactic ending is played for laughs, but it does not feel that funny. Physics based puzzles can often be frustrating in other games, but they are regularly the best part of Pikuniku due to some thoughtful level design that ensures items will roll or fly to where they should. You swing from grapple points with your feet, and you can kick buttons, barrels, boxes and other characters in order to solve puzzles or laugh at cartoony physics. As such, your key way of interacting with the world around you is through your feet. Immediately you will notice that Piku is nothing but a red oval with eyes and legs. Following this video, you gain control of your character, Piku, and begin exploring the world, starting to meet kooky characters. However, with the current technology advances, there is no universal image characterization technique that completely solves this problem. Most of the approaches focus on single image features aiming at detecting differences between real and computer generated images. As a matter of fact, important research has been made by the scientific community in this regard. Digital forensics techniques can play a significant role in this task. Differentiating a photo-realistic computer generated image from a real photograph (PG) can be a difficult task to naked eyes. This is not nakedness under a veil of nudity, this is nakedness as power. The development of powerful and low-cost hardware devices allied with great advances on content editing and authoring tools have promoted the creation of computer generated images (CG) to a degree of unrivaled realism. It portrays the body through beautiful, disruptive, and experimental lenses, subverting the historically dominant male gaze and celebrating the human form in all its rich variety. I think everyone will find at least one photographer they like in this show!’Īlthough broad and complex in content, the curatorial focus of ‘Nude’ is distilled. ‘What I’m showing isn't necessarily underrepresented bodies, and I do personally feel there is an issue to see this as a virtue in itself what happens when these bodies have been represented for a while? Are they all of a sudden irrelevant? With that said, it is very exciting and fun to see works in a wide array of expressions including different body shapes. It’s a photo that I love but that is very hard to post and show through the big online platforms, so I am very happy to show it to a wide audience,’ she says. ‘I also have a photo of my friend Adam Pettersson’s bum and balls through Lazoschmidl underwear with a cherry on top. Her work also alludes to the tension between nudity and censorship on social media, which is the subject of fierce debate. It is very important to me to do everything to deconstruct this hegemony, I am committed to invoking all these fights until they are won.’Īrvida Byström is presenting Cherry Picking. The series is a mix of still lifes and selfies, both of which have been feminised and dismissed as ‘low brow', according to the artist. ‘I am focused on giving a voice and visibility to those who are not or too little represented. It necessarily involves the other senses because it is impossible not to see, hear and smell people when you are close enough to touch them.’īut why does Pittaluga think it's important for contemporary photography to offer visibility to all body types? ‘I hope that one day this kind of question will no longer exist,’ she says. What interests me nudity, from a pictorial and emotional point of view, is the expression of the skin. The more body types we are exposed to, the more pragmatic our view will become.’įrench-Uruguayan photographer Bettina Pittaluga’s work in ‘Nude’ focuses on physical intimacy, which, as the artist explains, ‘can be revealed by being in someone’s personal space, or bonding through physical contact, by skinship. I created a series where I framed my models as sculptures and works of art in the hope that the viewer will suspend any judgments about whether they find the models sexually attractive or not, or whether their bodies are socially “acceptable”. Seeing nudes in a museum is one of the only exceptions to this. ‘In the US, what little nudity permitted is usually shown in a sexual context. ‘Most of the bodies we see online on a daily basis aren’t even real, but rather enhanced or modified by technology to conform to a current, unsustainable trend,’ says LA-based photographer Julia SH, who is exhibiting powerful, textured portraits of bodies rarely depicted in 21st-century media, presented in museum-like frames. But under this flawless skin is a rotten deception, one deepened by a social-media saturated society. Different schools of Indology derive different definitions for the concept from ancient Indian texts their definition is some combination of (1) causality that may be ethical or non-ethical (2) ethicization, i.e., good or bad actions have consequences and (3) rebirth. In the context of theory, karma is complex and difficult to define. Karma also refers to a conceptual principle that originated in India, often descriptively called the principle of karma, and sometimes the karma-theory or the law of karma. Wendy O'Flaherty claims that, furthermore, there is an ongoing debate regarding whether karma is a theory, a model, a paradigm, a metaphor, or a metaphysical stance. It is a concept whose meaning, importance, and scope varies between the various traditions that originated in India, and various schools in each of these traditions. Thus, karma has not one, but multiple definitions and different meanings. Buddhism and Jainism have their own karma precepts. ĭifficulty in arriving at a definition of karma arises because of the diversity of views among the schools of Hinduism some, for example, consider karma and rebirth linked and simultaneously essential, some consider karma but not rebirth to be essential, and a few discuss and conclude karma and rebirth to be flawed fiction. A bad action creates bad karma, as does bad intent. A good action creates good karma, as does good intent. Wilhelm Halbfass (2000) explains karma ( karman) by contrasting it with the Sanskrit word kriya: whereas kriya is the activity along with the steps and effort in action, karma is (1) the executed action as a consequence of that activity, as well as (2) the intention of the actor behind an executed action or a planned action (described by some scholars as metaphysical residue left in the actor). The term karma ( Sanskrit: कर्म Pali: kamma) refers to both the executed 'deed, work, action, act' and the 'object, intent'. This concept has also been adopted in Western popular culture, in which the events that happen after a person's actions may be considered natural consequences of those actions. In these schools, karma in the present affects one's future in the current life, as well as the nature and quality of future lives-one's saṃsāra. The concept of karma is closely associated with the idea of rebirth in many schools of Indian religions (particularly in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism), as well as Taoism. As per some scripture, there is no link of rebirths with karma. In Indian religions, the term more specifically refers to a principle of cause and effect, often descriptively called the principle of karma, wherein intent and actions of an individual (cause) influence the future of that individual (effect): Good intent and good deeds contribute to good karma and happier rebirths, while bad intent and bad deeds contribute to bad karma and bad rebirths. Karma ( / ˈ k ɑːr m ə/, from Sanskrit: कर्म, IPA: ( listen) Pali: kamma) is a concept of action, work or deed, and its effect or consequences. This pick came with the largest lidded mixing jar we tested (42 ounces), which is helpful for larger batches but does require more maneuvering for smaller servings. The blender attachment clips onto the motor with ease and feels secure. The nonstick edge on the blender arm means you can blend in your pots without fear of scratching. The rubber handle is soft, narrow and comfortable to grip and the “on” button is easy to hold down. It requires more up-and-down motion to blend uniformly, but we still found it easy to operate. Some models create a vortex that pulls food into the blades and results in suction on the bottom of the container, but the Breville’s blade guard is uniquely shaped to reduce this, which allows you to raise the tool more easily as you blend and helps prevent splatters. This immersion blender offers 15 speed settings and has a lot of great features that make it our top pick. We also considered the weight, power and settings of each model to find the best options. To test each immersion blender, we blended a smoothie, pureed a soup and made a mayonnaise. The pros in the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Technology Lab tested 13 models in our most recent test to find those that are easy to assemble, comfortable to operate and delivered on performance. No matter the type, the best models can handle big jobs like blending smoothies and pureeing soups directly in the pot and smaller jobs like making mayo or salad dressing. Others are designed with a motor that can be attached to the blender arm as well as other tools like a whisk, mini food processor or beaters like those on a hand mixer. Some are constructed as a single piece - the motor cannot be removed from the blender arm that houses the blades. Immersion blenders - also called hand blenders, stick blenders or wand mixers - give you the freedom to blend and puree foods without needing to transfer them to a full-size blender. We updated this story in February 2022 to ensure all products tested and vetted by the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab are in stock and reflect current pricing. |
